Located within upstate New York’s Minnewaska State Park Preserve, Sam's Point Preserve includes the highest stretch of the Shawangunk Mountains and a rare high-altitude pitch pine barren ecosystem. Forests of chestnut and oak trees surround these pine barrens. Sam's Point Preserve covers roughly 5,000 acres in total.
Hikers can take Sam’s Point Road Loop to the scenic Lake Maratanza or the Verkeerder Kill Falls Trail to the waterfall for which it was named. Although Verkeerder Kill Falls is on private property, hikers can view this beautiful, 187-foot-high waterfall if they remain on the trail.
Beyond Sam’s Point Road Loop and the Verkeerder Kill Falls Trail, the High Point Trail and the Indian Rock Trail rank among the most popular in the preserve. When hiked together, they create a moderately difficult out-and-back trail that spans roughly seven miles.
To protect its natural state, Sam's Point Preserve has a small parking lot that accommodates a limited number of cars. Therefore, hikers must secure a reservation or visit at off-peak times to ensure access.
